Wendy will lead a discussion based on her current work on engaging students as partners in global learning.

Our interconnected, interdependent world needs graduates who can live, work and continue to learn ethically and effectively in culturally diverse contexts. Internationalisation of the curriculum (IoC) is widely regarded as one of the means by which universities intentionally engage university staff and students in global learning; that is, in the critical reflection on our own cultural identities and the development a global/local imagination. Engaging in such teaching and learning can be challenging because the process prompts us to reflect on, and sometimes adjust our cultural values and worldview. However, both teachers and students have valuable cultural knowledge and life experiences that, when shared and respected, can enrich our approaches internationalising the curriculum. 

With the support of an Australian Learning and Teaching Fellowship during 2017, Wendy is working with staff and students in four Australian universities (including University of Sydney) to pilot innovative approaches ‘internationalisation of the curriculum’ (IoC). All of these approaches are inspired by the values and principles of the ‘Students as partners’ framework (Healey et al, 2014), in that they engage students and university staff as active, critical, and agentic partners in learning and teaching.

Wendy Green, PhD is a Senior Lecturer and Graduate Research Coordinator in the Tasmanian Institute of Learning and Teaching at the University of Tasmania. Her Australian National Teaching Fellowship (2017) is enabling her to focus on the research and development of innovative practices that ‘engage students in global learning’. Wendy is Co-Executive Editor of Higher Education Research and development and Convenor of the International Education Association of Australia’s (IEAA) Internationalisation of the Curriculum (IoC) Network.
